About Us

OCEAN is a broad based non profit, non religious organisation established in 2005 after a series of exposure to the plight of young people during the NYSC HIV/IDS, Reproductive Health Project. It was founded to help provide succour and serve as a platform for promoting gender concerns .Gender  is a cross cutting theme in OCEAN’s thematic areas. Over a period of time the centre has grown from its work with young people to address other social and developmental concerns.

OCEAN is working for gender equity through Advocacy, Capacity Building, Research and consultancy Services and strategic alliances for empowerment of men and women empowerment, communities and institutions for sustainable development


  1. To be a leading centre for promoting innovative trends, which will foster a functioning connected community capable of providing essential capacity building  services for addressing community  developmental needs
  2.  To be an efficient  self sustaining platform committed to the promotion of advocacy on democratic principles, environmental  management practices and gender equity for sustainable development


From time to time OCEAN is called upon to work on special projects. Such special projects include:

  • Capacity Building and Training in OCEAN’s thematic areas of intervention.
  • Fund raising for people centered projects.
  • Project design and implementation.

  • Public Policy and Advocacy Communication: Plays a central role in the democratic process by providing a means of public participation and promotion of the common good through its advocacy initiatives. OCEAN works in this area to promote constituent, organisational and sector interests.
  • Strategic Alliances: OCEAN values and works through strategic networks and Partnerships this takes form in several ways and can serve multiple purposes such as sharing of resources and improved operational efficiency. This has served to strengthen OCEAN’s staff capacity and the sector in general.


  • OCEAN’s advocacy intervention in this unit seeks to promote better environmental practices, such as Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), sanitation and hygiene promotion. The benefits of proper sanitation and hygiene are advocated to the communities through the organisation’s Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) related programmes in schools and communities.
  • OCEAN’s work on sustainable environment is focused on environmental governance, advocacy on water, sanitation and hygiene, the Organisation promotes the use of appropriate, simple and affordable water technology for access to safe and clean water.
  • OCEAN’s activities are people oriented especially for women and are channelled to promote sustainable livelihoods. The human right to water and sanitation entitles everyone to sufficient, safe, physically accessible and affordable water. OCEAN advocacy efforts also include climate change and conservation of environmental resources for sustainable development.
  • Child Protection: Plateau State being  one of the 6 states that the Federal Ministry of Women and Social Development, IntraHealth/CapacityPlus, Menstrual International, UNICEF and USAID  supported to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the child and family welfare system and Social Welfare Human Resource Gap Analysis. The Child Protection mapping and assessment (inclusive of workforce analysis and public expenditure review) was to guide the State Ministry of Women Affairs & Social Development and other relevant actors to develop a state strategy and action plan for child protection system strengthening/reform. The assessment will also feed into the planned State Plan of Action for Vulnerable Children Development and the response plan of the upcoming national Violence against Children Survey. OCEAN was among the organisations consulted to undertake the 6months project and to achieve this, OCEAN facilitated various activities such as advocacy, stakeholders meetings, FGDs including collection, collation and inputting of data into the toolkit from 2013 to 2014
  • OCEAN is currently implementing a 2 year project on promoting Child Rights Law in Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa North Central Nigeria with funding from the European Union
